Running & Walking in the Dark Mornings & Evenings

As a regular runner and weekend walker, I notice the dark mornings and dark nights
soon come back around. Going for my run in the early morning, means that it is dark when I set off.

One of the main requirements for achieving your goal is to develop and practice good habits and for me, taking regular exercise to start my day, is one of my good habits.

So, for those that are new to running or walking, maybe you started earlier this year, or you may even be seasoned runners or walker, below is how I stay safe when I am out pounding the streets!

Running in the dark can be cosy and refreshing but you need to stay safe and comfortable. Be sure to invest in some good reflective clothing, so you can be seen in the dark. You can buy, jackets, vest, tabards, trainers, caps and much more. By wearing reflective gear, vehicle drivers and other pedestrians will be able to see you. Do you remember the reflective bands you wore as a kid around your arms and legs, well you can still buy them and they are great for increased visibility.

It is a good idea to invest in a head torch or body torch, so you can see in dark areas of the route. I use a head torch to light the way on a particular set of steps that I run up on my route. A head torch will make you visible as well as light the way. If you don’t like to wear a head torch you can buy a body mounted torch or you could just simply carry a hand torch. Alternatively, you could stick to routes that have street lighting and avoid uneven paths.

I would always recommend carrying a mobile phone and it is a good idea to have some ID on you. You can wear an ID bracelet or carry a card with your name and emergency contact details on it. Always tell someone your route and expected time of arrival back, if you can.

If you run or walk on roads always do so against the traffic so you can see the traffic coming towards you or try and stay on paths and make use of dedicated walking and running paths. Try and always be alert and aware of your surroundings, especially if you wear ear buds. You should really be able to hear ambient sounds. Ensure you scan your surroundingfor potential hazards.

It is safer to wear light or bright coloured clothing when out in the dark, as you will be easier to see. You could also go out with a buddy or a group, which can be more fun than going alone. It is good practice to vary your route and times you go out. That way you are less likely to be targeted by someone who has studied your route and habits.

Become a weather watcher! Dark nights are often accompanied by cold temperatures or slippery conditions, so watch the ground under your feet. Watch out for black ice, as it is hard to see. Dress in light layers to keep the warmth in.

Trust your gut feelings, if something feels wrong, change your route or head home.
